Located in South America, this is one of our favorite places for a long-term trip. It offers plenty of opportunities for adventure and the chance to get up close and personal with ancient history. A travel agenda to this place isn’t complete without a visit to the Mayan ruins at Tikal, a trip for souvenirs at Chicicastenango’s markets, and a day at Monterrico’s black-sand beaches.

Depending on your budget, it’s usually easiest to fly to Guatemala from the United States, with most major travel hubs offering daily direct flight options. Yala National Park offers an incredible experience for nature and wildlife lovers. The drier season is also the best time to visit historic sites like Sri Lanka’s ancient temples and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, when daily temperatures are typically between 23°C and 31°C.
If you’re looking for a cheap travel deal, it’s best to avoid the months of December to April, which are when most visitors come to Sri Lanka. Homestays are some of the best accommodation options, especially for solo travelers, as most are run by families.

Booking trains is the easiest way to travel around Sri Lanka, and it’s a cheap way to see the sights. It’s worth noting that most trains offer air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned carriages, so do your research in advance and make sure to select an air-conditioned ticket. Long-distance tickets will usually cost less than $10 USD, and seats can be pre-booked in advance at the main train stations, including Colombo, Nanu Oya, and Jaffna.

Bran Castle, famous for being the home of Dracula in Bram Stoker’s eponymous novel, is one of the main attractions. Standard tickets to visit the castle cost 90,000 RON (or $21 USD), while a guided tour will set you back 140,000 RON (or $32 USD). This medieval castle is known for its stunning architecture, and you can visit the Tea House Restaurant on-site without needing a castle ticket. The restaurant is open until 8 pm, making it the perfect way to experience the castle at night.
Outdoor enthusiasts with an extra day or two in their schedule will want to head to the Fagaras Mountains, where they’ll find the highest peak of the Southern Carpathians. Many of the hiking routes are designed as multi-day excursions, and more experienced hikers can follow the route along the main ridge of the mountains, one of the longest in Europe. Moldoveanu, Negoiu, and Vista Mare are three of the country’s highest mountains, each over 8,300 feet tall.
Romania is also famous for its well-preserved medieval ruins. Travelers can step back in time with a visit to Sibiu, with its cobblestone streets and ancient architecture, giving a taste of old-world Europe on a budget. Set aside at least a day to check out everything Sibiu has to offer, from the Citadel to the Brunkenthal Museum and the legendary Bridge of Lies, rebuilt in 1895.

One of our top tips for traveling to Nepal is to avoid the busy seasons of October to November and March to April, when you can expect prices to be at their highest as mountaineers descend on the local towns along the popular trails, including those heading to Everest Base Camp.

While most paths are busy, they are well-established enough for the average hiker to be able to navigate without the added expense of hiring a professional guide. If you’re traveling light (or don’t want to pay extra for flying with luggage), a daily rental of a hiking jacket or bag will usually set you back 100 INR or $1 USD.
